LITTLE ISLAND LIVE VOLCANO
|
Author:Carol Tuitt
Foreword: It is with great pride and pleasure that we introduce to you, "Little Island. Live Volcano: The Story, The Songs, The Sights and Sounds. This project is aimed at developing and producing a multi-media programme for children aged six to twelve years old.
This is based on the realities of the Soufriere Hills volcano which has been active here on the Caribbean island of Montserrat since July 18,1995. It relates the story of the experience of living with a live volcano. It also highlights the impact which these events have had on the lives of persons still living there, as well as the thousands forced to flee to islands and countries around the world, not knowing if, or when they can retum home.
The entire package will serve to document the activities and experiences in the lives of Montserratians, but will also teach the lessons of this crisis in a manner which is simple and pleasing to the senses.
Little Island... Live Volcano: The Songs is a collection of fifteen (15) songs specially written and arranged for children, presented on cassettes and compact discs.
Little Island ...Live Volcano: The Story is a narrative (booklet) in simple prose and poetry, which tells the story of each song.
Little Island ...Live Volcano: Sights and Sounds is a visual documentary-styled presentation of significant events during the volcanic crisis. This includes a video series, as well as an interactive DVD/CD-ROM which would allow children to navigate through text, audio, and visuals and thus directtheir own learning. During times of crisis, adults try to provide protection and maintain a sense of normalcy fortheir children. Ideally, they would wish to prevent them from enduring pain related to the situation. The effects of natural disasters cannot be hid however and one way of helping children cope with life-changing situations, is to ensure that they have a clear understanding of what is happening around them. Thank You.

TALES FROM THE BRIAR PATCH
|
Author:Julius Lester
The four award-winning Uncle Remus books--now in one volume with a new introduction by Julius Lester
Brer Rabbit is causing trouble again for his fellow creatures Brer Fox, Brer Wolf, and the rest--this time in an omnibus edition that brings together all the stories from Tales of Uncle Remus, More Tales of Uncle Remus, Further Tales of Uncle Remus, and Last Tales of Uncle Remus.
The Uncle Remus tales, originally written down by Joel Chandler Harris, were first published over a hundred years ago, and serve as the largest collection of African-American folklore. In this four-book series, Julius Lester masterfully retains the flavor of the tales, while dropping the heavy dialect of the Harris originals and adding contemporary language and references-- ensuring that the stories will be understood and enjoyed by new generations of readers. And, of course, the stories are beautifully illuminated by the slyly humorous full-color and black-and-white art of Jerry Pinkney. The result is a treasure of a volume that will delight all ages and belongs on every shelf.
