Denise Hinton was born and raised in Louisville, Georgia. At the age of 12 she was brought to Brooklyn, New York and raised by her grandmother. Now she considers herself a Native New Yorker.
Ms. Hinton has been an employee of the Department of Veterans Affairs for 32 years. She has worked her way up from a Clerk Typist to an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Specialist for the Director's Office of the Department of Veterans Affairs, New York Harbor Healthcare System in New York City. Her responsibilities include but are not limited to writing and updating EEO policies, receiving EEO Discrimination Complaints, conducting training for all staff on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, prepares Annual Affirmative Action Reports, Coordinates two Mentorship Programs and Chairs the EEO Advisory Committee and the Cultural Diversity Committee. She is a member of the Editors and Writers Board for the Medical Center Employee Newsletter. Ms. Hinton received the '1997 Woman of the Year Award' at the New York VA Medical Center and in 2000 she received a 'Citation Award' for her work in Equal Employment Opportunity from Congressman Gregory Meeks Office.
Ms. Hinton is a member of Triumph, The Church of the New Age where she has been a member since 1968. Her positions in the church are Secretary, President Senior Choir, President, Young People's Educational Band, and the Editor of the Youth Newsletter.
Ms. Hinton went back to school in 1997 and she has recently received her BA degree from City College of New York in June 2004. Ms. Hinton is married and has one daughter who is a senior at Hampton University. Ms. Hinton enjoys writing, singing and sewing decorative pillows.
Ms. Hinton published her first book of poetry December 2002 entitled 'Thoughts Unleashed.' It is a collection of insightful poems on relationships, celebrations, life and inspiration. She has been writing since she was 18 years old. She says her book is a dream that has come true. Ms. Hinton is currently working on her second book, which will be a book of letters.
