C&B BOOKS, was started in 1995, by Carol Rogers & Brenda Piper. Two years ago we started the C&B Book club, the club has grown immensely. The motivation behind this book business, was the lack of affordable books written by black authors. We decided to become an asset to our Youth and the African American commuitiy in a whole. We offer our books for less then the major stores, we knew this would provide our readers with a wider variety of reading material. We have, titles for all ages in all catagories, fiction, non-fiction, spiritual, inspirational, educational etc

We have a winner from Blast From the Past February Contest. Congratulations Ms. Brown you will receive a $20.00 Gift Certificate towards any book purchase!
Thank you for participating in C&B; Books Contest.

If I could go back in history it would be during the Harlem Renaissance. There was so much creativity during that period for African Americans. Even though I realize it was still a difficult time it seems that it would have been such a joy to be alive as a young adult during that period. To possibly know some of those great people alive during that time would be a dream come true.

National Poetry Month

When is National Poetry Month? April. Every year.

Why is April National Poetry Month? When the Academy began its planning for the first National Poetry Month, it approached booksellers, librarians, and teachers to determine what might be an appropriate month. One criterion was that it had to be a month when school was in session, so that students and the educational audience could be reached most effectively. Fall was felt to be too crowded with holidays, so spring was considered an ideal time. February is Black History Month; March is Women's History Month. So April seemed a logical choice, especially given the poetic references (T. S. Eliot and Chaucer).

How can I get a copy of the National Poetry Month poster? To request copies of posters, use our handy online order form. To view images of all our posters, old and new, visit our NPM Gallery.

What happens during Poetry Month? Thousands of bookstores, libraries, schools, and cultural institutions participate each year in National Poetry Month, through readings festivals, book displays, workshops, and other activities. The Academy actively works to catalyze these many activities. And by serving as a central clearing house for the publicity of these activities, and of the occasion itself, the Academy attempts to build a unified confederacy of many disparate and otherwise unconnected organizations-to make them parts of a whole.

The Academy works with partner institutions, including the American Booksellers Association, the American Libraries Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the office of the U.S. Poet Laureate, and the Urban Libraries Council, to provide materials and assistance to participants across the country. This includes each year the creation and distribution of almost 200,000 National Poetry Month posters, which are mailed for free to teachers, librarians, and booksellers nationwide.

Through its web site the Academy provides free resources for poets, teachers, librarians and booksellers, including tips for developing effective poetry programs and displays, a listing of major national poetry awards and events, discussion forums, and exhibits featuring poems, biographies, photographs, bibliographies, and audio clips.

Each year, the Academy also attempts to program an original and exciting event to attract the public's attention for the launch of National Poetry Month, and actively encourages organizations and individuals nationwide to present more and better poetry events throughout the month of April. To ensure that poetry gains national attention in the media each April, the Academy mails several thousand National Poetry Month press releases and thousands of press kits each year to editors and journalists across the country. The Academy sends numerous mailings throughout the year to groups and individuals, such as the members of the National Book Critics Circle or regional book-selling associations, to encourage especially their participation in this effort, asking them to increase the amount of poetry books they review in April or give poetry a greater presence in their store windows and displays.

The Academy also develops and places National Poetry Month advertising in more than twenty-five national magazines and newspapers, and in so doing reaches the many millions of readers who might then visit their local bookstore or library or the shelves of their own homes.

What are the goals of National Poetry Month? There are seven goals for National Poetry Month:

To highlight the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets

To introduce more Americans to the pleasures of reading poetry

To bring poets and poetry to the public in immediate and innovative ways

To make poetry a more important part of the school curriculum

To increase the attention paid to poetry by national and local media

To encourage increased publication, distribution, and sales of poetry books

To increase public and private philanthropic support for poets and poetry

When and by whom was National Poetry Month created? NPM was launched by The Academy of American Poets in April 1996.
