I SAW THE LOOK IN HIS EYES...
Written By: Moses Miller

The other day I was sitting on the Long Island Railroad, dozing in and out of consciousness during the early morning hours. The stops all blended together as a never ending dream occupied the real estate in my mind. I awoke somewhere after the Jamaica, Queens stop, only to find a middle-aged white lady sitting next to me that I hadn't noticed before. She smiled awkwardly when our eyes met, and I smiled back. In her hand she was holding the morning's issue of the Post. I glanced at the cover, for the second time catching her gaze. It seemed as if she was waiting for me to awaken because she didn't waste any time asking me, "So, what do you think about Barack?" He was on the cover of her paper, so the question wasn't really thrown at me from leftfield. However, over the many years I'd been on this earth, a white person had never ventured to talk politics with me. So in a way, I was pleasantly surprised. I politely replied, "I think he's an intelligent individual." "Yeah, it must feel good to have someone like you running for office, huh?" I laughed taking her comment in stride and said, "I don't know if Barrack is like me, but it feels good to know that we may have someone qualified in office soon. I mean after Bush and all."

I could tell that my answer wasn't quite what she wanted to hear. Her face was slightly contorted, and her skin had started to redden ever so slightly. Still she seemed to be fully focused on our discussion, shifting in her seat so she was facing me now. I'm a blunt individual, however even I was surprised by her next statement. She boldly said, "I meant it must feel good to vote for a black man." Yes, she took it there. It was respectful though. I was tempted to lie, but I didn't feel a need to. This was a day after the North Carolina primary where greater than 90% of the African American vote went to Obama. So, her assumption was reasonable. Back in 1910, a black heavyweight boxer named Jack Johnson stepped into the ring with a white fighter named Jim Jeffries. At the time there wasn't a black person alive that wasn't praying that Johnson would knock his block off-and he did. When Jackie Robinson stepped up to bat for the first time, blacks were holding their breath hoping that he wouldn't strike out. To be honest, after hundreds of years of injustices being committed against black people, O. J. could have walked into court for his first trial with a jagged knife in his pocket, a mask on his face and bloodied Bruno Magli shoes on his feet. Right or wrong, a lot of people I know would have still been saying, "He's not guilty. He didn't do it." I must have zoned out for a minute because I heard her say, "Do you know anything about his policies? All I ever hear him talk about is change. Are you going to vote for him just because he's promising change?" By now we had attracted the attention of other passengers on the train, most of which were Caucasian. They all seemed to be looking at me indirectly, or their ears seemed to be aimed in my direction yearning to hear my response.

The following words flowed out of my mouth without much thought. "The other day I was doing a speaking engagement with a young group of African American teens from a low income neighborhood. At the end of my discussion, I asked them each what they wanted to be when they grew up. I got the typical answers from football to basketball players and a couple that wanted to be rappers. But, when I got to one teenager he told me that when he got older he was going to be the president of the United States." She smiled and said, "Really?" "Yeah, really," I said with a slight tinge of attitude. "He didn't say he wanted to be the president, he said he was going to be the president of the United States with confidence in his voice. And when I saw the look in his eyes, I could tell that he actually believed that his dream would come true. It was at that moment that I truly realized how much hope and inspiration Barack brings to my people-especially the next generation coming up. So, honestly, I don't know everything about his policies. I don't know everything about any of the politicians that are running for office. They all say what they think the people want to hear any way. But, I do know what I saw that day in the eyes of that child. And I know I want to see that look of hope more often." The lights flickered off and on as we went beneath the tunnel that led to Penn Station. Over the loud speaker the conductor made a few announcements. People began to stand grabbing briefcases from the overhead racks, and jockeying to get in position in anticipation of the doors opening. Silently, I wished that we had more time to speak because I knew that she could never understand what it meant to have someone intelligent, articulate and deserving representing my people in a race for the most powerful position in the world. No disrespect to Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, but neither one of them had a prayer. Barack transcends race, due to the fact that he can't be challenged on anything outside of the obvious, which is the color of his skin. The doors to the train opened, and I headed down the aisle towards the exit. When I reached the platform I felt a tug on my arm. I turned around and saw the same middle-aged white women standing there in her business suit, with a smile on her face. "I just wanted to say thank you," she said. "Why?" I asked. "You just reaffirmed my belief. I go back and forth with my husband every night, but he is adamant that Barack doesn't have a chance to be president. And he says even if he did, somebody would assassinate him anyway. So, he's voting for McCain in the general election. For me, Barack represents everything you just said, but not only for black people. I believe he represents hope for everyone," she replied with conviction. A man hurriedly rushed off the train, and bumped into the lady without even saying excuse me, knocking her bag to the ground as he stormed off. Engrossed in the discussion, we both hadn't even realized that we were blocking the doorway the whole time. Some of her belongings fell out of her bag, and we both bent down to retrieve them as other people on the platform stepped around us. I picked up her keys, and handed them to her along with an ID badge that was attached to a lanyard. Her purse had also fallen out the bag, and she was collecting some loose change that had been ejected. As she put her change away a picture in her wallet caught my attention. She saw me staring when she glanced upwards and I looked away embarrassingly. "That's my husband and our daughter when she was first born. She's going to be three next month," she advised as she put the last of her belongings away. "I'll just have to keep working on my husband. Hopefully he'll let go of the past and embrace change as well." We bid each other farewell, and went our separate ways, both happy that we had taken the time to talk to one another. Throughout the day, my thoughts kept drifting back to our conversation and that picture she showed me. Her daughter had hazel eyes and a fair skinned complexion. Her husband was African American with skin darker than mine. I saw the look in his eyes too...

TEACH!!! NOT ONLY DOES THIS WRITING OF THE MARVELOUS DR. KARENGA SHOW HOW HORRENDOUS AND INHUMANE/INHUMAN THE ENTITY THAT IS DEATH ROW AND THE RACISTS WHO OVERSEE IT ARE, IT ALSO EXEMPLIFIES THE STRENGTH, FAITH AND MAN THAT IS TROY DAVIS! I COULD NOT READ IT WITH A DRY EYE AND EVEN SO IT MAKES ME SO FURIOUS AT THE INJUSTICES IN THIS GODFORSAKEN COUNTRY!! RIGHT ON, K-MAN!!

ON DEATH ROW WITH TROY DAVIS:
SEEKING HIS LIFE AND LIBERATION
Los Angeles Sentinel, 10-30-08, p. A-7
DR. MAULANA KARENGA

Say what you want or will, there is something ethically savage and socially unseemly about engaging in official killing as an object lesson, preventive measure or pretension of doing it in the name of God and social good or in the interest of justice, just reward or coming to closure by satisfying the bloodthirsty call and hunger for vengeance. And if we add to this early man sense of justice the morally monstrous practice of killing the innocent, because they are vulnerable and convenient victims, it takes even a more cavish, cruel and callous turn. \

Such is the case and precarious position of Mr. Troy A. Davis, a vulnerable and convenient victim of the Georgia and U.S. systems of justice with their race and class biases and their addiction to dealing death as an official and honored practice. Mr. Davis, an African American, sits now on death row in Georgia, waiting again to learn whether he will live or die, be exonerated and let free or be killed as a result of an unjust and wrongful conviction for a murder of a White police officer, which the evidence argues he did not commit. Indeed, there was no DNA evidence or murder weapon produced or presented by the prosecution and seven of the nine witnesses have since recanted. Some have cited police coercion as the source of their false testimonies; and others have said another man has admitted to the killing for which Mr. Davis was charged. One of the two holdout witnesses said he only saw the shooter's clothes and that he was left-handed, although Troy is right-handed and the other hold-out is a suspect himself.

Mr. Davis case has wound its way thru at least 29 judges in seven kinds of reviews since his wrongful conviction in 1991, taking its heavy toll on him and his family, especially the three times he has been brought to the brink of being executed and the execution was stayed almost literally at the last moment, coming one time within 90 minutes of his being killed. His case, from the beginning, was clearly problematic and pockmarked with flaws and prejudicial profiling and prosecution. As much as we might want, work and even pray for a post-racial society and a president to prove it, it is the long history of racism and its daily, disabling, and deadly practice that undermine our illusions and force us to face its pervasive presence and persistence. As Rep. John Lewis, honored vet-eran of the Civil Rights Movement and a supporter of the efforts to exonerate and free Troy, stated in a recent interview, In spite of all the progress we've made as a nation and a people, we still have so far to go. For the scars and stains of racism are still deeply embedded in every corner, in every aspect of American society. And nowhere is this more evident and indicting than in the disproportionate number of African Ameri-cans on death row which according to an NAACP Legal Defense Fund report is over 41%, three times their number in society.

It cannot be easy to live daily as a dead man walking, to have said good-bye to family, friends and supporters three times and to have waited to be walked to the chamber of horrors called the execution room and there have your life taken even though you are innocent and be unable to do anything about it. And so one can only admire the internal strength of Troy Davis, what he calls his never ending faith. In a letter to his supporters, he talks of that foundational faith that sustains and uplifts him and makes him tell us, I am in a place where execution can only destroy your physical form, but because of my faith in God, my family and all of you (supporters) I have been spiritually free for sometimes and no matter what hap-pens in the days (and) weeks to come, this Movement to end the death penalty, to seek true justice, to expose a system that fails to protect the innocent must be accelerated.

For he says, There are so many Troy Davis . And this fight to end the death penalty is not won or lost through me, but through our strength to move forward and save every innocent person in captivity around the globe, Prepared for the worst, he nevertheless hopes for the best declaring at the end of his letter, I can't wait to stand with you no matter if that is in physical or spiritual form. I will one day be announcing I AM TROY DAVIS, and I AM FREE. Never Stop Fighting for Justice and We Will Win.

His life and letter are a model and mirror of the unbreakable human spirit, of a victorious consciousness, and the refusal to be less than the ancestors definition of us in the fullness of our humanity as bearers of dignity and divinity, worthy of the highest respect. And it also reminds us of the sacred teachings of the Odu Ifa (43:1) that says even if we are going to die, we must wage a life-and-death struggle. For thru struggle we strengthen ourselves and open the way to victory, justice and the good we all desire and deserve.

Bro. Troy also rightly pays hommage to his sister, Martina Correia, saying he marvels at her love for him, worries about her health and knows she will not back down from this fight to save my life and prove to the world that I am innocent of this terrible crime. Reminding us of the internal strength and struggle of Fannie Lou Hamer and our heroic foremothers, Sis. Martina refuses to tire, talk defeat or be dispirited. A cancer survivor who, she notes, feels the effects of 7 years of constant chemother-apy, she says in a letter to supporters, she remains steadfast and still prayerful and hopeful, determined and working daily to exonerate her brother and bring him home.

Introducing herself in the letter to her supporters she says, My name is Martina Correia and I'm on death row because that is where my brother lives. Indeed, we are all on death row with Troy Davis, struggling and strengthening him and each other, reso-lutely seeking to secure his life and libera-tion. And we do this so that justice can be done, the death penalty can be defeated and the sacredness of life can have presence and power beyond our sacred books and the various circles that read and recite them and then act otherwise.

Hello Everyone:

Happy November!
Hope that you all are doing well and ready to begin this month. There are so many things to look forward to this month. Birthdays, Anniversaries, Election, Thanksgiving and other occasions that may be special to you.
Whatever you are celebrating this month, do it with love, peace, joy and know that you are blessed. So many did not make it this far in this year. Many of us did not make it to their special occasions, because they were called "Home".
We are so blessed to be living in this day. No matter how grim things may seem around you, there is always a blessing peering through the darkness. God always has a light that will shine in the darkness. That is why we have salvation. Once we have received that, it is like an instant glow that is placed in us that shines wherever we go. The light of glory shines through us to make our situations seem insignificant and this takes away the stress and replace it with peace.
So when you are feeling down and out this week, think of an upcoming event in your life and how blessed you are that you can not only plan for it but actually live to see it.......

Psalm 18:28
Lord, you have brought light to my life; my God, you light up my darkness

Psalm 16:11
You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Psalm 27:13
Yet I am confident that I will see the Lord's goodness while I am here in the land of the living.

Be blessed by His word,
Pam Adderley

To Understand This Moment

To truly understand this moment in time, you have to grasp all that has happened to bring us to this place.

You have to understand slavery and how it ripped apart our families, took away our status, stripped us of our manhood and gave us new names.

You have to understand how we were promised, and never received, our 40 acres and a mule.

You have to understand Jim Crow and how its laws beat down on our people and dehumanized us.

You have to understand bathrooms marked COLORED and sitting only on the back of the bus.

You have to understand lynching's in the South and know about Emmett Till.

You see, to truly understand this moment, you have to not only know something, but feel something.

You have to feel the perseverance of Marcus Garvey, Harriet Tubman, Mary McCloud Bethune, Sojourner Truth, Booker T. Washington and countless others.

You have to feel the anguish of Daisy Bates, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and millions of others.

You have to have courage like Shirley Chisholm, Alan Keyes, Carol Moseley Braun, Lenora Fulani, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton,

Yes, to truly understand this moment in time, you have to know a little history, identify with the struggle and

You have to be able to dream a dream like Martin Luther King, Jr.

To dream a dream that seems impossible, like millions of parents who told their children by faith, that one day they could be President, even when they didn't believe it themselves.

See, it takes all of this and so much more to truly understand this moment.

Do you understand?

EATING FRUITS

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits? IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and their life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD.
Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining -- every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc., actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will not happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE: Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene -- the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can u believe this?? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive.

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life. Read this...It could save your life!!

Let's say it's 6:15 PM and you're driving home. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

'HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE':

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. This allows the heart attack victim to get to a hospital.

Tell as many people as possible about this. It could save their lives!!

Holly
GOD LOVES U, and ain't nothing you can do about it.
