SAVING OUR SONS
|
Raising Black Children in a Turbulent World
Author:Marita Golden
"As the mother of a black son, I have raised my child with a trembling hand that clutches and leads," declares novelist Golden (And Do Remember Me). Though her book title is overbroad and her narrative a bit jagged, she crafts a moving story, mainly of raising her son, Michael, whose middle-class status is no badge of protection from cops or peers. With family ties frayed by mobility, Golden has built a community with friends, but is estranged from her Nigerian ex-husband and wonders if Michael suffers without a father figure. In the course of her tale, Golden marries a man Michael likes, and eventually takes her son to a happy reunion with his father in Lagos, Nigeria. She mixes accounts of Michael's struggles in school and his shoplifting episode with meditations on D.C.'s mean streets and meeting the mothers of sons killed by drugs or convicted of murder. Racism must be dismantled, she knows, but she also argues that the "first line of defense against racism" is self-discipline. And, she adds, just as forgiving Michael's father was a vital act of motherhood for her, black men and women must practice forgiveness of each other in order to help save their community

Raising Academically Successful African American Young Women
Author:Freeman A Hrabowski, Monica L. Greene, Geoffrey L. Grieff, Kenneth I. Maton
Statistics indicate that African American females, as a group, fare poorly in the United States. Many live in single-parent households—either as the single-parent mother or as the daughter. Many face severe economic hurdles. Yet despite these obstacles, some are performing at exceptional levels academically. Based on interviews with many of these successful young women and their families, Overcoming the Odds provides a wealth of information about how and why they have succeeded-what motivates them, how their backgrounds and family relationships have shaped them, even how it feels to be a high academic achiever. They also discuss the challenges of moving into African American womanhood, from maintaining self-esteem to making the right choices about their professional and personal lives. Most important, the book offers specific and inspiring examples of the practices, attitudes, and parenting strategies that have enabled these women to persevere and triumph.

SINGLE MAMAHOOD
|
Author:Kelly Williams
African-American single mothers can raise children who are self-assured, happy, and healthy. Single Mamahood, a down-to-earth, sister-to-sister guide, teaches women that they can realistically challenge the obstacles before them. It teaches them to put their energies into taking care of their children's needs and shows them how to develop healthy relationships with their children's father, their peers, and extended family.
The author acknowledges that many children of single mothers engage in criminal activity, score on the lower end of standardized achievement tests, and are most likely to become single parents themselves. This book helps to break the cycle.
Complete with real stories of single mamas, Single Mamahood offers suggestions on how to deal with work, school, child support, discipline, dating again, and more. Women who follow this approach to parenting will be given an alternative to feeling victimized or desperate. And their children will no doubt feel totally loved and self-assured, knowing that they can do anything just like their mothers.
