(New York, New York) March 21, 2005 Author Caroline McGill publishes her first novel, A Dollar Outta Fifteen Cent and shares the fears and harsh realities of dealing with the HIV/AIDS virus.
A passage from the book reads: Portia kept up with the news, so she knew that all across the world, young black women were dying from AIDS faster than any other demographic. Afraid of becoming a statistic, she went ahead and did it. In the last eight months, she and Jay got tested twice, and each yielded a negative result, thank God! The narrative is based on events surrounding the life of Portia Lane an exotic dancer who desperately wants to turn her life around. When one last sexual escapade as Mystique, her stripper alter ego betrays her vows of friendship, Portia is burdened by betrayal. Simone Benson is sleeping with her married boss, Kyle, who lavishes her with gifts to keep her eyes closed. Laila Atkins, the meek and wise married mother of two, watches as her relationship falls apart. Fatima Sinclair, a verbose, control freak is stricken with panic after taking her first HIV/AIDS test. These four friends must find the moral and spiritual strength to deal with their destinies. A Dollar Outta Fifteen Cent is provocative, uncensored and brimming with complex emotions. In chapter 22 McGill writes: Portias soul was wounded and her heart ached. Tears rolled down her face for her dear friend, whom fate had driven to such an untimely death. I understand how topics such as HIV can be scary to young people, but it is our reality and we must not turn a deaf ear to the epidemic, says McGill.
