C&B BOOKS, was started in 1995, by Carol Rogers & Brenda Piper. Two years ago we started the C&B Book club, the club has grown immensely. The motivation behind this book business, was the lack of affordable books written by black authors. We decided to become an asset to our Youth and the African American commuitiy in a whole. We offer our books for less then the major stores, we knew this would provide our readers with a wider variety of reading material. We have, titles for all ages in all catagories, fiction, non-fiction, spiritual, inspirational, educational etc.

This work is the truth ... in rhyme. When asked how she got into poetry, Renee McRae simply states "Poetry got into me." A native New Yorker, Renee is a poet, speaker, empowerment coach and seminar leader. Although formally trained as a legal secretary and having worked at some of the most prestigious law firms in the U.S., Renee always felt there was something more to life.

After selling cars, real estate, temporary office services, medical alert systems and a marketing career, Renee found the true search begins within and her true love: speaking. A believer in her mother's favorite adage "No knowledge is wasted," this multitude of positions reinforced in her mind and reflected in her life what she has always known in her soul - You can have or be anything you choose. Truth In Rhyme is a reflection of her commitment to spreading this positive message

BOOK DESCRIPTION:
"Truth In Rhyme" is a uniquely inspiring book of motivational poetry. Thought-provoking and empowering, this work touches your soul and uplifts your spirit.

BOOK REVIEWS:
I heard Renee reciting her poetry one night and it was very inspiring. I was the first person to jump out of my seat to get an autographed copy of "Truth In Rhyme" when she was done. She has a very special gift to help us understand more about love, friendship, resilience, persistence and life.

Her poems have helped me get through some challenging times and I keep her book handy in case I need to reread some of them. I even have her poems on CD so I can listen to them while I'm driving. I believe in her work so much that I'm going to hire Renee for a day to recite her poems for kids in a school district I do some business I currently work with throughout the year. Kids really need to hear her message too. Thank you Renee!

It is truly impossible to read Renee's poetry and come away untouched by her enthusiasm for life and her love and faith in God and mankind. I find "Truth in Rhyme" a truly enlightening and inspirational work of art. The only thing better than reading Renee's book, is to listen to one of her presentations. If you ever get the chance, you'll come away feeling as if you've just received the best gift in your life. You just might possibly be right. Congratulations Renee, my friend, on this great accomplishment!

I have read this book and feel that it not only relays truth but spirital and practical guidance through rhyme. The author is a truly gifted author and one who, I feel has only just begun her journey into this dimension. Everyone should read and become inspired by her thoughts. Her poems are truly universal and ones that everyone can relate to her work. C & B Books is proud to profile your book, and we look foward to working with you for many years to come in the future. Youth Organization Gets Help With a New Kind of Fundraising
By Beryl Stone~10-7-04

After test marketing a few of the latest issues of Strong G Island Biz (SGIB) Long Island's First Bilingual Urban Music magazine, along with the music industry's first magazine of its kind in their school, the orders came rushing in. Editor-in-Chief, Gerard's vision for his publication is to create a family magazine paid for by either advertising or sponsorship and give it to youth groups as a form of fundraising or young business-minded youths who will sell the magazine as a form of income for themselves. The summer issue, which contained the sit-down interviews with the number one Hip-Hop artists on the cover, Lloyd Bank$ and Young Buck of G-Unit, along with articles throughout the community and entertainment business, is a much have issue among the young people. Ms. Arlene Harris, Youth Advisor for the Huntington Bethany Youth Group had this to say about SGIB Magazine when asked what her thoughts were on the publication, "Well, we are all excited about it and happy to see a bilingual interracial magazine on Long Island, that is well written" Then Ms. Harris was asked how the youth's who were in the magazine and how they were affected after they saw it. Her response was, "Ownership is important and of course if they are in it, they are going to be excited about it. Not only are they in it, they know you and are a part of you, not many youth can say they know the Editor and the photographer of a magazine. They also have the opportunity to become a part of it. I think just for that reason, they are excited about it. The part that is going to be very exciting for them is when they can sell it and make money on it." One of the youths from the group, Christina Davis had her thoughts about the magazine, " I think it is really good that a magazine that has such favorite artists in it and us in it as well, is really great." Christina's goals in life are to become a kindergarten teacher or a lawyer. We wish her much luck in her future.

SGIB Magazine is at a serious cross-road. While gearing up for what might be it's final issue, "SGIB Goes Funk" with it's first band on the cover, 'The Nappy Head Funk Army' and a one-on-one interview with the Funk master himself, Mr. Bootsy Collins. SGIB Magazine is also introducing the new Pacific Northwest sound of Norman Sylvester and The Boogie Kats. Due to the lack of advertising support or sponsorship, Gerard may be forced to shut down the printed version of the magazine and decide if he wants to continue it on the Internet. "It's an educational tool for all ages, with it's unique marketing strategy of one side printed in English and then you just flip the magazine over and an exact replica has been translated into Spanish, blending both cultures together in a format we all enjoy together, music! Besides, it would only work in print not on the Internet. There is so much talk about lending a hand to help the youth and these people do have good intentions and until those with deep pockets recognize we can't keep offering the same old things, mostly sports, we have to be willing to try other things. Flash ideas that offer a faster pace with quicker resolutions, being a team player and nothing does it better to offer the above than the media. This vision is a fantastic opportunity and it may not come to fruition," Gerard laments.

Gerard talks about his vision and states, "The vision of the magazine is that local businesses that support the magazine by way of advertising, I give the business owner a stack of magazines to sell, both for their own exposure and also a way of recouping their expenses for the ad. Yet, I am only one person and much more support is needed [marketing, sales, advertising reps, etc.] to keep this unique publication and concept afloat. I also enjoy helping the youth of our communities. I offer them a way to bring in some spending cash for themselves and at the same time, learn a little about running their own business, while being exposed to a form of media they can relate to, enjoy and learn from."

Gerard launched his vision in April of 2003. He has been a free-lance publicity photographer for over 30 years, is the East Coast representative for the "Godfather of Soul", Mr. James Brown's newsletter, "The Truth". His photography has appeared in local and national newspapers as well as national and international magazines. Gerard states the main reason for starting up SGIB Magazine was due to his long history of photographing music artists, " I wrote a column about Urban music with a local monthly music magazine for one year, my stories and photography were cover worthy mentioned eight times. I quit after one year and then came to realize that both urban music and Latin music was not represented at all on the Island. Long Island has put out so many artists from our own backyards and I wanted to bring attention to that historical fact. Hip-Hop has a rich history from all parts of the Island and so many talented singers and performers in Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn and Queens. Strong Island is so underrepresented and I felt I could change the point of view of people in general, the record labels and the P.R. people and offer a lot through my experience and contacts and blend it with everyday people." I have to say, I am in complete agreement.

Gerard has also given back so much to the youth of different communities. After severing three years in prison from drug sells, turning his life around and rather talking to the same ole choir in AA and NA rooms of recovery he focus on the youth. He was the Youth Advisor of the Islip Town Branch of the NAACP. He also is a mentor to a wonderful young man from East Northport and has had five events that his corporation, P.B.G.'s Productions/Photos by Gerard, along with his own pet project, "Dreams Are Nothing More Than Plans Awaiting Action", has put together by bringing artists to Long Island to talk and perform for different youth organizations. His main motivation for helping youths is that "I lost the ability to be there and raise my own two daughters, through choices his addiction and now I believe if I can help just one youth understand we all make mistakes and we can learn from them that it's never too late to follow your dreams, then I am happy. And I am proud to say that goal has happened. It's always very gratifying to be able to help the young people." Gerard also has been guest speaking at schools to spread his message and attends other events, speaking as well. There are a few boxes of SGIB Magazine left so if you're an organization or business-minded individual and would like one box, you can contact Gerard at (631) 969-3676 or e-mail him at [email protected]. Remember Dreams Are Nothing More Than Plans Awaiting Actions.
