Wanda L. Thomas has written two books on improving self-esteem in children. The
books are written for both boys & girls which is exciting for the children because
it will enable them to identify. We highly recommend these two titles as a wonderful
addition to your holiday shopping list. You can cover both the girls and boys with the
purchase of these two titles. |

The challenges that children must face, particularly during their tender, formative preadolescent period, are just as dramatic and significant for their future life orientation, as any that they might face during their years of growing into adulthood. As the African American community in general continues to face serious sociopolitical and economic challenges that often have broad psychological components, the need for well written, psychologically and pedagogically sound children's books that present young readers with models of resilience and self-esteem, is obvious. Among such sorely needed books are Handsome Me, and Beautiful Me, two companion books whose main characters are a preteen boy, in the first, and a girl of comparable age in the second. Written by Wanda Thomas, a native of Harlem, New York City, and beautifully illustrated by John Higgins, these two books help prepare children to deal effectively with the negative perceptions that others project upon them.

Reviewer: The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (see more about me) from RAWSISTAZ Book Club
Julius Carmichael is an eleven-year-old boy who attends a private Quaker school and is about to start the fifth grade. As a new school year approaches, Julius is excited to be going back to school because he has his first male teacher. Upon arriving he also finds that there is another black student in his class, which is a shock because he is often the only black person in his class. Things get off to a rocky start as Julius makes assumptions and judgements about his classmate and discovers that even he was misjudged by others.

Well, as you know, it's time for my birthday again. Last year, they had a really big party for me and it seems like they will again this year. After all they have been shopping and preparing for it for months now, and there have been announcements and advertisements almost every day about how soon it's coming! They really do go overboard about it, but it's nice to know that at least one day of the year some people are thinking about me a little. You know, it's been many years now since they first started celebrating my birthday. Back then they seemed to realize and appreciate how much fun it is for the little children. Just the same, it seems that most folks are missing the point of it all.

Greetings all!! Every year during this time, RAWSISTAZ tries to put together some type of book donations program. This year, we're going to be sending books to the Middle East to a young lady and her company (U.S. Army) who have emailed me requesting our support. She is stationed in Baghdad, Iraq. They have been there for 7 months and will be there possibly through April 2004. She says:
